THE GLORIOUS GOSPEL OF THE BLESSED GOD |
“According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust” (1 Timothy 1:11)
There is much confusion today as to what the true gospel really is. Those who believe in “Lordship salvation” have complicated the gospel message by presenting to the sinner all kinds of added requirements: surrender to His Lordship, fulfill the terms of discipleship, love God supremely, turn away from sin, obey His commands, etc. This tends to shift the focus away from Christ and the true gospel onto ourselves and our own shaky faith and fragile commitment. In this booklet our desire is to let the Scriptures simply say what they say in order that we might understand afresh what the good news actually is and how the sinner can personally appropriate God’s so-great salvation and reap the benefits of God’s gift of eternal life. |
THE CENTRAL PERSON OF THE GOSPEL IS JESUS CHRIST.
“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord” (2 Corinthians 4:5).
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God....Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:1,3,4).
“For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son....For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” (Romans 1:16).
“For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”
(Acts 16:31).
THE FOCUS OF THE GOSPEL IS UPON THE CROSS AND THE EMPTY TOMB (the substitutionary atonement and the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ).
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
“Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:5-6).
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor. 1:18).
“For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:9).
“Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?...And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:26,46-47).
THE EMPHASIS OF THE GOSPEL IS UPON THE SUPER-ABOUNDING GRACE OF GOD.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2:8-9).
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24).
“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24).
“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth” (Colossians 1:5-6).
“For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:17).
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Eph. 1:7).
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (2 Tim. 1:9).
“According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust....And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus”
(1 Timothy 1:11,14).
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel” (Gal. 1:6).
THE RECEPTION OF THE GOSPEL IS BY FAITH AND FAITH ALONE.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
“To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10:43).
“Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference” (Rom. 3:22).
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:9).
“Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved” (Luke 8:12).
“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe” (1 Cor. 1:21).
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Gal. 2:16).
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8).
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed [lit. “having believed”], ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Eph. 1:13).
THE DYNAMIC OF THE GOSPEL IS THE POWER OF GOD.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God....But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:18,24).
“Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8).
THE ORIGIN OF THE GOSPEL IS TRACED TO THE MIND AND PURPOSE AND LOVE OF GOD THE FATHER.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thess. 2:13-14).
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved” (Eph. 1:3-6).
“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will” (Eph. 1:11).
“Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (2 Tim. 1:8-9).
“We love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE GOSPEL DEPENDS UPON THE WORKING OF GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT.
“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake” (1 Thess. 1:5).
“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high....But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8).
“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:4-5).
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged” (John 16:7-11).
THE AWESOME AUTHORITY OF THE GOSPEL IS THE WORD OF GOD.
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Pet. 1:23-25).
“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures” (James 1:18).
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 1:17).
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace...And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:15,17).
“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel” (Colossians 1:5).
THE THRUST OF THE GOSPEL IS UNIVERSAL
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matt. 28:19).
“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47).
“Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her” (Mark 14:9).
“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith” (Romans 16:26-26).
“If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister” (Col. 1:23).
“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30).
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17).
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GOSPEL IS PLACED UPON GOD'S PEOPLE (THE CHURCH).
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
“Go ye therefore, and teach [make disciples of] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19).
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
“Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21).
“I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also” (Romans 1:14-15).
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” (Romans 10:14-15)
“For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16).
“But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts” (1 Thess. 2:4).
“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:19-20).
“And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak” (Eph. 6:19-20).
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
THE OPPOSITION TO THE GOSPEL IS SATANIC.
“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Cor. 4:3-4).
“Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved” (Luke 8:12).
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph. 6:11-12).
THE RESPONSE OF THE WORLD TO THE GOSPEL IS HOSTILE.
“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you” (John 15:18-19).
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor. 1:18).
“And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased....As many as desire to make a fair show in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ” (Gal. 5:11; 6:12).
“For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews” (1 Thess. 2:14).
“Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8).
“As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes” (Rom. 11:28).
“Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you” (1 John 3:13).
THE FRUIT OF THE GOSPEL IS EVIDENT.
“[the gospel] which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth” (Col. 1:6).
“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power....For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thess. 1:5,9).
“To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me” (Acts 26:18).
A WALK WORTHY OF THE GOSPEL IS REQUIRED.
“Only let your conduct be as it becometh the gospel of Christ” (Phil. 1:27).
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Col. 1:10).
“We preached unto you the gospel of God. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:9-10).
“Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more”
(1 Thess. 4:1).
To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you” (1 Cor. 9:22-23).
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1).
TELL IT!!
The Gospel is a fact; therefore tell it simply.
The Gospel is a joyful fact; therefore tell it cheerfully.
The Gospel is an entrusted fact; therefore tell it faithfully.
The Gospel is a fact of infinite moment; therefore tell it earnestly.
The Gospel is a fact of infinite love; therefore tell it feelingly.
The Gospel is a fact about a Person; therefore preach CHRIST!

SAVED BY GRACE ALONE!
I am not what I ought to be.
I am not what I want to be.
I am not what I hope to be
in another world,
but still I am not what I once used to be,
and by the grace of God
I am what I am!
(1 Cor. 15:10).

THE TRUE GOSPEL
By E.Schuyler English
In these days of religious confusion, when Biblical terms such s "born again" are being abused, it is well to keep our definitions clear, that our message may be clear. This is particularly true of the word "gospel." What indeed is the true gospel?
Let me begin by asking a question. Which of these three statements defines the gospel: (1) Come to Christ and follow Him? (2) Repent of your sins and turn to God? (3) Ask Christ to save you and come into your heart? If you answered that none of these is the gospel, you are right. Each one is an appeal, based on the gospel, but none of them is the gospel.
The gospel, which simply means "good news", is a positive declaration of the Person and work of Jesus Christ. Paul defines it in his first letter to the Corinthians: "I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you...how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Cor. 15:1-4). There it is, and any deviation from it distorts the message and brings the preacher of "another gospel" under the judgment of God, as Paul declares so forcefully: "If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" (Gal. 1:9).
Paul uses six terms to describe the whole scope of the gospel which he preached:
1. The Gospel of God (Rom. 1:1). Here is the source of the good news. It does not originate with man, but with God, who "sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (1 John 4:10) and sent His angel to declare "good tidings of great joy...to all people"
(Luke 2:10).
2. The Gospel of Christ (Gal. 1:7). Here is the theme of the good news, already noted. It is the declaration that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, "came into the world to save sinners" (1 Tim. 1:15), that the Father "laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isa. 53:6), and that He is risen again and is at the right hand of God, making intercession for us (Rom.. 8:34).
3. The Gospel of the Grace of God (Acts 20:24). Here is the nature of the good news. God proclaims that he has an undeserved gift for all mankind, salvation through faith in His beloved Son. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:8-9).
4. The Gospel of your Salvation (Eph. 1:13). Here is the work of the good news. It is the "power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth..." (Rom. 1:16). "God hath chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, whereunto He called you by our gospel..." (2 Thess. 2:13-14).
5. The Gospel of Peace (Eph. 6:15). Here is the effect of the good news–peace! It is peace with God: "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:1). It is also peace of conscience: "...the blood of Christ (shall) purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God" (Heb. 9:14).
6. The Gospel of Glory (the "glorious gospel")—(1 Tim. 1:11). Here is the final goal of the good news, that those who receive it may share in God’s glory, both now and in eternity. "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Cor. 3:18). Christ "tasted death for every man...(that He might bring) many sons unto glory" (Heb. 2:9-10). "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world" (John 17:24).
GOOD NEWS
By D. L. Moody
I do not think there is a word in the English language so little understood as the word gospel. We hear it every day. We have heard it from our earliest childhood. Yet there are many people–and even many Christians–who do not really know what it means.
The word gospel means "God’s spell," or "good spell," or, in other words, "good news." The gospel is good tidings of great joy!
No better news ever came down out of heaven than the gospel. No better news ever fell upon the ears of the family of man than the gospel. When the angels came down to proclaim the tidings, what did they say to those shepherds on the plains of Bethlehem? "Behold, I bring you sad tidings"? No! "Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour" (Luke 2:10-11).
If a man received an urgent dispatch couldn’t you tell by his looks what kind of message it contained? If it brought good news, you would see it in his face in a moment. If it told him that his boy, away in a foreign land, a prodigal son, had come to himself as did the one in Luke 15, don’t you think his face would light up with joy? And if his wife were with him, he would not wait until they got home, or until she asked for the letter. He would pass it to her, and her face would also brighten as she shared his joy.
But the tidings that the gospel brings are more glorious than that. We are dead in trespasses and sins–and the gospel offers life. We are enemies of God–and the gospel offers reconciliation. The world is in darkness–and the gospel offers light. Because men will not believe the gospel that Christ is the light of the world, the world is dark today. But the moment a man believes, the light from Calvary shines on his path and he walks in an endless day of unclouded sun.
It was my privilege to go into Richmond with General Grant’s army, where I heard that the Negroes were going to have a jubilee meeting. These people were just coming into liberty; their chains were falling off, and they were just awakening to the fact that they were free. I have heard many eloquent men, but I do not think I have ever heard eloquence such as I heard that day in that black church from a chaplain of a northern regiment:
"Mothers!" he cried. "You rejoice today. Your children have been torn from your embrace and sold off to some distant state for the last time–you are forever free!"
"Young men!" he called. "You rejoice today. You have heard the crack of the slave driver’s whip for the last time–you are forever free!"
"Young maidens!" he exclaimed. "You rejoice today. You have been put on the auction block and sold for the last time–you are forever free!"
I was never in such a meeting. Men and women, boys and girls, everyone shouted, "Glory to God!" They believed that it was good news.
But my friends, I bring you better tidings than that. No slave ever had such a mean, wicked, cruel master as those who are serving Satan. And to the poor sinner who has been so rebellious and wayward the gospel brings a message of forgiveness: "Be ye reconciled to God" (2 Cor. 5:20). It is His message of friendship. He died that we might be reconciled to Him. Is not this gospel of reconciliation a glad gospel?
God offers a pardon to every sinner on earth if he will take it. I do not care who he is or what he is like. He may be the greatest libertine that ever walked the streets, or the greatest blackguard who ever lived, or the greatest drunkard or thief or vagabond; but I come with glad tidings for him..
"Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely" (Rev. 22:17). I know that the word whosoever means every man, woman, and child in this world. It means a growing lad, a gray-haired man, a maiden in the blush of youth, a young man breaking his mother’s heart, a drunkard steeped in misery and sin. My friends, will you not believe this good news? Will you not believe that it means you?
